I definitely would take a suitcase and check it - but that's me. But one could get one of those postal boxes that you pay one price for the box (if it fits, it ships) and use it to send home any sharp objects or other items that fit to avoid TSA.

My friend and I are driving from Long Island. We are bringing our machines so that we can sew in our room in the evenings and turn QuiltCon into a week long retreat. Every other year it has been too far to drive so this will be a new experience of not having to pare down what we take with us and bring home. That being said, if you do end up flying, you can get a rotary blade and a basic pair of scissors there if you need to. One year, I forgot all of the fabric I prepared for one of my classes and I had to purchase everything there! It was no problem.

You're going to have a great time. This year I have 2 classes and the rest lectures. I can not wait!

I'm also wondering about flying home after the show. Purchasing items at the show that may not be TSA approved. I am flying with a carry on only, no checked baggage. Do they have the availability at the show to ship your items home for you so they don't have to go in the carry on?
