next, that patch has been flipped face down; clipped and tucked in at the center; pinned to hold it in place, then sewn from the other edge in. just as we've done several times already.

this is what it looks like when you're ready for the next seam.

now flip it so the open half of the "Y" is lined up with the next petal. when you turn it face down, it will fold the other petal in half

line up the background with the petal, then flip the whole thing over.

when it's flipped, pin at the center as we always do, then sew from the outer edge in.

when you flip the flower back open, you will see the background hex sewn neatly into place.

i call this a "Y ON EARTH WAS I KILLING MYSELF TO DO THE Y SEAM AS ONE CONTINUOUS SEAM?"

it's easier and gets the job done.

eventually, you'll get to a point at which you have a "U" to sew; not just a "Y"
when you get to the "U", just do the same thing you did when it was time to sew the 6th petal to the center

pin on both sides; sew across; then sew the left and righ side seams to complete the "U"

this is my garden block. many, many, MANY more to go. there will be white patches between them so they "float" on the background.
