My template makes it come out with 20 petals.

Can you not draw it out & make your own template. My 1st sewing class was for sampler quilt & the pattern for the Dresden Plate was made out of cardboard from a cereal box.

I think it looks wonderful, I didnt pick up on any errors until you told us what was off...
Butterflywing, thanks for the idea on how to make your own templates, I never thought of your method.

I never found a template at Joanns either I had to order from Missouri Quilt Company.
One I have not seen either is a 90* template

I did just the other day!! I used a template I used to make a complete quilt with a couple of years ago. I was only making one block this time & guess what.......I needed another petal to make it lay flat. I used fabric different than what was already in the plate - something that blended & I have to look hard myself to find it!! I'm leaving it. Still not sure what happened but it has to have been that I used too wide a seam this time.

the corner of any square ruler is 90*. so if you lay one edge on a straight line, the other "leg" of the corner gives you the 90* angle. all you have to do is draw a line against that second leg, crossing the first line, and you form a cross, with 4 - 90* angles coming together in the center. just make sure that everything goes right across that center hole.

i don't mind spending money for notions that i know i'll be using many times, but this isn't one of them. every time i made a dresden plate it had a different number of petals, so after the first template, i started making my own.
