Does the light squares have to be white?

Thank you so much! The dark constant was about a yard, not big enough for much else, the "lights" are scraps :-)

The scrap bags can vary quite a bit. Most of the strips are around 30" long, and most have selvages. The widths are anywhere from 2" to 3-1/2". Once you cut the selvage off, you end up with a 1-1/2" to 3" wide strip. Sometimes all the fabrics will be from one collection, and sometimes you'll get a mix of two or three collections. It really is a grab bag.

No, anything light you'd like to use. I have white, off white, beige, tan, a coupld pale pale yellows, some small prints that looked like they were a solid light color from a distance. I just dug into the scrap of light stuff and pulled stuff out. Since your color next week will be the rest of the lightsand what I was calling the brights, and you will be most pleased with a lot of contrast.
