I spent yesterday 'experimenting' with pinwheel sizes. I now have 4", 5", 6" and 7" finished pinwheel blocks which I am happy with and have decided to use my scrap stash to make a 'row by row' pinwheel quilt.
Of course I may change my mind somewhere along the row :)

I'll be making roughly 120 pinwheel's using Whimsy (by Fig Tree Quilts) and Bella Solid Natural. I'm also going to sash with the natural to get a queen sized quilt in the end. It will rock. ;)

5" squares finish at 5.25" so you would need 8 pinwheels across the top and 11 down for 88 pinwheels.
That would be 88 light and 88 dark squares.
I yd of fabric 36 x 42 would give you 56 squares so I would buy 2 yards to have some extra for mistakes.
But you need for 2 blocks each so if I wanted only two colors I would get 2 yards of a light and 2 yards of a dark.
If you wanted it scrappy you could mix and match for a total 2 yards of each dark and light.
I hope you aren't confused. Ask more questions if you want!
Please remember this is MY way, not necessarily the right way!
I do the best I can.
