I did one recently from a magazine, it used stars and rail fence was fast and easy. Just as others have said if you use red white and blue it becomes Patriotic.

You can also go to the Quilts of Valor site: qovf.org

There are free quilt patterns available there. they measure (at least) 55" x 65" (I think)

I made an eagle quilt before and used this pattern:

The only applique is the tail feathers, the rest is pieced.

I made this from my stash, not from pre-cut packages of fabric.

Here is where I got my inspiration.

The log cabin quilt is pretty big for a lap but maybe you can leave the border off or make it very narrow.

Yes, any pattern in patriotic colors but I also like this pattern and have made it.

If you browse through you can also find the alternative layout using log cabin blocks only incase you do not like or have a center panel.

Note the last picture is a drunkards patch block made with Patriotic prints.

More true colors. Note Army pillow panel as center.

If you goggle "quilts of valor" you will come up with several sites that offer free patterns. There is even an official one sponsored by the armed services. Lots to choose from.

Fons and Porter have a free e-book titled "Patiotic Quilts." It is a free download and the patterns are very nice.

You could use any patriotic fabric and use any block such as any in this quilt

I bought a panel with flags, and intend to do Log Cabin quilting around the panels.
