How Many of Us Knit?

I taught myself to knit years ago...even though I can knit, I'm still really basic. I found a sweater pattern that starts with solid color yarn and you introduce varigated yarn in the "yoke" of the sweater. You knit the sleeves; pass on a holder; knit the body in the round; once you get to a point you add the sleeves to the needles and start with varigated yarn...looks so impressive......I've made a lot of these; one year I did 12 at Christmas...bt like with so many things I gave them to folks that didn't appreciate them !
I have one started now for me, but the main color is black and I have a hard time seeing the yarn.......
I too taught myself to crochet and have made many afghans...one time I even crocheted one of my daughters a bathing suit ! I also used to sew a great deal....took an English smocking class when I was pregnant with youngest child (who will be 30 nextweek) and for the first 2 years of her life she had a new hand smocked dress to wear to church....she even had smocked play clothes ! I also did some heirloom sewing.....I even made my then husband wool plaid pants and a matching vest...might be why we aren't married any more !!! I was so impressed, matched the plaids up perfectly...don't think he was as impressed as me
All I do now is trying to learn to quilt and I do some alterations for other for a little extra income.

To my left (laying in the bed), is the open closet with three book shelves, up to the ceiling loaded with sorted fabric in color ranges. I love to look at it. It took me an entire day to arrange that lol.
To my right on the dresser is a row of knitting books and a container of patterns, and my radio cd player. There is no tv in this room so far.
The row of knitting books and patterns called to me. I always remember a pattern by Merdith Grover. It was her Mother's pattern of the Peacock Facecloth. I have always wanted to have a go at it.
It is challenging to me as I have not learned to see as I knit and am not too experienced in that field but do love it, especially on a day like yesterday.
I knitted on it all day long while listening to, "Angels and Demons". I carefully knitted evey step but somehow must have missed something. I don't see the peacock. The cloth is pretty anyway. I had picked a verigated aqua/white cotton.
I will try it again as I have seen others do it and I can see the Peacock. I have the pattern by Meridith Grover. I read in her instructions that the pattern was published in the, "Workbasket" in November 1954 issue.
I was delighted to read that and went and serched my Workbasket mags that, Anne, from this board sent me some time ago. I love those mags. Well I only found two mags from 1954 lol. and it was not there.
If anyone here can help me with this pattern or has some more written instruction that could help me, please let me know. Sometimes, it helps to read several version before it sinks in.
Here is a pic of the cloth, I found on the web...and here is mine with no Peacock in sight lol.....

Rosie, I'm rereading Angels and Demons! I read it long enough ago that I hardly remember a thing...it's like a new book. Lol.
I enjoy knitting, though I'm not doing much of it. And I love audiobooks and knitting!
I'm sure your peacock will show up with blocking!! I'll be on the lookout for it!

I do knit as well as quilt. I started back when I was in 2nd grade and a neighbor taught me the "knit stitch"...and I made a vet from rainbow varigated yarn...was quite proud of myself.
Many years went by before I knit again...and learned the "purl stitch" so many more options for knitting opened up.I knit for a few years then, and now in just the last few years I have started knitting again. I knit vests, scarves, hats, mittens, dishcloths....mostly simple projects, have never taken on something too lacy or complicated project. I knit to relax while watching tv in evenings, or when with friends....have to have a project that I can talk and knit at the same time and not goof up!

I learned how to knit, crochet, sew and tat from my granny. I love to crochet, knit just goes to slow for me and I can't tat anymore because of a wrist inury long ago. *I drop the threads too much*.
However, I love knitted items I get as gifts.
