I completely agree with this. Not only will you have a plan, but a sample block will allow you to make mistakes (and come back here to ask questions) at no cost to your valuable jelly rolls. I have found that making a sample block allows me to feel much more confident about cutting and sewing the rest of the fabric/blocks.

grocifer, are you saying it's you (the village idiot) vs. the Bali Star quilt pattern? You shouldn't be so hard on yourself! That looks like a very complicated pattern! I say 'bravo' for taking it on.

your being to hard on yourself. Its going to be beautiful when you are finished.After all the work that you have put into the blocks it will be nice to have it finished. I love Judy's patterns. I started the "Geese at my Wedding" Table runner at a quilting retreat and everyone that was there told me I was CRAZY. it took me all weekend but I finished Unit A... only Unit B & C left to go.Then I'm starting the Glacier star.

When I saw your topic title, I went into it to see the the "Village Idiot" quilt design looked like! I thought you were choosing between two quilt patterns to do....

I am in the process of making this pattern. Had the pattern awhile as I was intimidated but have found it isn't that hard. Hardest thing was deciding what colors of batiks to use.

I started reading through the pattern this weekend. I understand Judy's approach of putting the paper templates on top of the fabric strips to save time, but I think that makes things more complicated. I am going to make the arcs the traditional paper-piecing way... #1 through #8 and not start in the middle.

I do have a question though. I am choosing not to use batiks. I am going to use the Morris' Apprentice collection by Barbara Brackman. There are only 5 colorways that it breaks down into -- not 6 sets like the Bali Pops strip sets. Is that ok? I didn't see any color diagrams for placements in the directions. Does that make a difference in the pattern? Can I just make more arcs from the 5 colorways that I'll be using?

I know what you are talking about. I just finished a Double Wedding Ring and it was the hardest quilt top that I have ever done. It was a class, and I had lots of help, but that didn't make it easier. The problem came when it was time to put the rows together. I fussed with it for a whole weekend, and finally got it together. Let me just say my seam ripper got quite a workout. The only thing I learned from the whole experience is if a class is scheduled for six sessions, you can bet it's going to be a difficult pattern!!!
