i wonder if it has to do with prewashing? Unwashed fabric has a kind of glaze that may repel the tape

Good idea!! I use the blue painters tape, too, but it doesn't stick as well as I'd like.

I love blue painter's tape! There must be more than one kind (weight) now though. The last roll I bought is VERY thin and does not seem to hold as well. I will be paying more attention to the next roll I buy, but I still do not feel like paying more or going to the internet to buy the pink one.

I am quilting a large quilt on the diagonal now, and 2 things that have worked for me are that "golfclub" thing that attaches to the walking foot and and moving a big sticky note along. Since I have to reposition every few inches, anyway, the sticky note works well (and I can pull it loose from the stitching when I accidentally mow over the edge of it.)

i did get the blue tape, but on my washed fabric, it seemed to be pulling a layer of fibers off when I repositioned it.

I have always used blue painters tape
With no problems, love it!!

If you live where your sewing room gets hot (as mine does here in FL when I am not it there sewing), keep the tape (the pink Floriani) in a cool room. I bought some in the spring and when I tried to use it yesterday it left residue on EVERYTHING including my fingers and nails as well as the fabric. My blue painter's tape is kept in the same room and I have had the rolls for several years and not had such a mess with any of them. Don't get me wrong, I love Floriani products but in my (overheated in the summer) sewing room, pink is not for me.

I took a Craftsy class on quilting with a walking foot and the instructor clearly stated she uses blue painter's tape to mark guidelines on her quilts and showed how she does it. I've used it as well with no issues, no residue, etc.
