This is what I do since I am mostly stitching in the ditch. Just got back two charity quilts from a LAQ and she quilted them in a light grey and they both look fine. She is learning to use her new toy and I am getting my charity quilts quilted for free. So NO complaints from me.

I've had good luck with yellow. Seems to work with a lot of colors and highlights the quilting.

I also turn to a shade of gold when quilting multi-colored tops. It doesn't seem to fight with other colors and always looks nice when done.

Pale yellow and light pink also seem to blend in with so many other colors. Surprised me when I tried it out.

I try to use a color that matches the fabric.

I use a lot of cream color or ecru instead of the stark white. I also use a lot of gray .

Off white is what I use most of the time. I about all colors are dark I pick one closest to the most used color.

I hand quilt, so I always use the color of thread that matches the back of my quilt.

I think that a sage green works this way too--blends well.

I also use ecru or light gray for most of my quilting. I do have good luck using Sulky Invisible Thread Polyester Monofilament. I only use it for the top, and use a light gray or ecru, cotton or polyester, in the bobbin. I also found that I get best results by putting the thread vertical instead of horizontal in my machine.
