Yep, that's what I do too. It makes a huge difference in getting all of my seams to match up. Especially good when doing those flippy corner thingys: sew just along, but not on, the raw edge-side seam line. Then when you fold over that corner it matches up beautifully with the underneath corner part, giving you a true-sized patch. Works for me.

Aside from how to sew the 1/4" or 'scant' 1/4" seam, I wonder about the person who designed and wrote ther instructions. Like does saying a 'scant' 1/4" make them feel superior or better or more skilled?

i think it means they care about the people who will use their instructions, and that they want to set them up for success.

I like to think that I measure and cut accurately - but my pieces are actually a "scant" bit larger than what I say they are.
I wonder if anyone checks the sctual size of their cut pieces?
For example, if I rotary cut around a template that seems to be " exactly" four inches square - my cut piece will measure a bit bigger than four inches.
If o uses a die- cutter, are the pieces " exactly" the expected size?
These differences in cutting also need to be allowed for, in addition to the seam width.
