My Viking also does this when I use a particular thread for quilting. Only Coats and Clark seems to have this affect and piecing with it is ok. For me I think it is the drag from the quilt. C&C also shreds on me. So when quilting I use a better thread and the problem is gone. Machines are like people, no two are the same and they all seem to like different things.

Your tech is not being honest about that......I have had brand new machines do this......there are no moving parts touching your threads until you get to the lever.......the lever doesn't wear out. Janome finally put a little lock on their levers that keeps the thread in the lever. On my Janomes without the lock, I THREAD THE LEVER FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE....LEFT TO RIGHT...it keeps the thread in the lever.

Mine too! Now I use a magnifying glass to be sure.

I know that I and others have had that happen on our Viking D1's and it is irritating. I've started using a separate thread stand and that has helped a lot.

The vintage machines do not have a slot in the take up. The slot was added to be convenient to thread the machine.

Glad to hear you think it fixed itself!

I thought the thread may not have been between the tension discs.

I've fixed a couple machines by super glue-ing tiny washers to the take-up. The sew-er has to thread through the circle, but the thread never jumps out again.
