    I've used chalk before with great success. I ONLY use washable chalk though. It is dusty though but it doesn't bother me because I wash quilts before gifting them.

    I have used the colored chalk (the fine line type that fits into a pencil type holder)and used Oxyclean when I washed it. Chalk was removed--looked great. I even washed the quilt in very cold water.
