Yes, I like to have a quilt w/o batting for the summer (as what they are intended for) when the a/c is on....it's just enough to keep the chill away. I have a top ready to be quilted and I was thinking about doing the back with flannel, no innards...not sure just yet.

mom used to use an old flannel sheet between layers. it made use of the "winter sheets" that were getting worn and thin, and was perfect weight for summer.

I recently dug out a flannel quilt kit and backed it with minky; came out great. Go for it.

How about this lady, making 6 quilts a day, no batting: (starts at 1:15 minutes into video)

If I was going to do a quilt with two cotton pieces, I would find the cheapest thinnest flannel I could, wash it several times for shrinkage and use it as the "batting" . But as I learned early on from a long time quilter.......it is your quilt, do it anyway you want to.

Why not? I think it is a great idea.
So often our quilting projects are made to be used-so make something you can use. It gives a wonderful opportunity to show off your piecing, applique or whatever medium you use and still be useful.
