IF you don't have any problems with salt intake...a 1/4 tsp of baking soda in a small glass of water will clear up the congestion in 5 minutes flat so you can breath again and your chest will lighten up. It is the best and quickest remedy I know. Vicks on the feet before bed with socks definitely will stop the night coughing.
And if anyone wants a really good recipe for a cough syrup...
Take a turnip and do it like you would a pumpkin...hollow out the inside, fill with brown sugar and replace the top. (hollowing out a turnip is hard work) Leave it in a cool dark place for twelve to 24 hours until it not only liquifies, but tastes more like medicine than brown sugar. Pour into a bottle and refridgerate. Not sure how long it lasts, but it sure does help a cough! It is a traditional family recipe...Canadian native medicine

sore throat???? Get a washcloth COLD wet...wring it out, wrap around your neck. Use a man's sock (or something big enough) and wrap around your neck...pin it in place. take washcloth out and get it cold wet until sore throat goes away. My gramma always made us do this and believe it or not, it WORKS!

As a nurse, I second that motion. Especially if you are having trouble breathing. Could be influenza or pneumonia.
Our 42 y/o son almost died last year, all in a 3 day time frame. Had bilateral pneumonia and hemophilous (sp?) influenza. Ended up in intensive care, sedated and on a vent. Nothing to mess around with.

When my daughter was little she used to get really high fevers, everytime she was sick with anything. I used to wrap her in a wet towel (wrung out) and then wrap a big dry blanket over that. She was warm and cosy and the wet towel underneath kept the fever down. I so hated to give fevered kids a lukewarm bath, they got so cold! So this was a great solution! Your post just reminded me of that :)

Garlic is supposed to help -- cook it with the chicken in the soup.
My favorite for sore throat and congestion is chamomile-mint tea with honey and lemon in it.

Mucinex will help with the congestion. If you have lots of congestion, it might take a day or two to kick in. Also, I just stocked up on Cold Eze for cold season. I think the active ingredient is zinc.

I hope you feel better soon!

Sounds more like flu than a cold. If you are having difficulty breathing please go to a DR now.... It can turn deadly in moments.
