My new "fan design" quilting frame

I'm new to quilting and I'm ready to put my qulit together on a quilt rack. My husband is going to make me a Fan Quilting Rack. Please don't think I'm slow but how do you put the top, batting, and back on the boards? Shouldn't the order be on rail 1.all three,rail 2. the top, rail 3. the batting, and rail 4. the backing. I not sure and someone said they made sleeves for their rails how does that work and how do you attach the fabric and batting (nails, staples, tacks)? So many question. I hope you can help me out. Thank you

I have one like this that my hubs and I made and I really like it. The sleeves are fabric that are attached to the boards. I used upholstery fabric and sewed them so the boards fit inside and then stapled in the center to prevent movement and to keep them centered. I did this for the long rails and the short ones so each are always ready to grab and use. I've tied quilts on mine and even used it to baste a quilt so I wouldn't be on the floor. It can be left setup as it doesn't take up a lot of floor space or can be rolled onto the rails to store until you can get back to it. I think the frame that fits your space and method of quilting is the best out there. For me....this IS the best.

Those of you with limited space...do you know that you can hand baste your quilt and then you can take it with you wherever you go???? CHeck ouit Sharon Shamber's method of hand basting and then hand quilting. I am using it and I DO NOT have any wrinkles and I don't have to take up a ton of space in my family room. I can vouch that her method works. You just need a large table and some boards....NOT on my knees any more.

I have a frame my husband made me like a Grace frame. I like this concept as it is so simple. I could use rails of many lengths and even store a quilt in progress by lifting it off the frame. Pretty cool.
canderson: you might want to load your frame a little differently. Front rail closest to you has all three layers. Next rail is the backing, batting on the next ( or just let it hang) last rail which is farthest away is the top. By bringing the top over the backing rail some tension is created on the quilt sandwhich.
