just took a class and was taught to leave them up. A whole different aspect of quilting is now open for me!! I'm going to get in real trouble if I don't stop learning new techniques.....I have 4 tops to be quilted and 3 more tops in process!!! to bad I have to work full time.

The feed dogs are up for the smoothest most consistent stitch. Just like a straight stitch on a seam.

Feed dogs are always up for appliqueing, never have I heard of the suggestion to put them down.

UP! No control without feed dogs being engaged. You can't get even stitching lines without them. Can't get a consistent ''bite" into your applique.

I leave them in the same position as when I am doing my normal sewing, such as sewing two blocks together. If I put the feed dog down into the machine, I will be ready for free motion. Hope that helps.
