My Grandma was English and used old cardboard (stiff cardboard) ALWAYS. She said nothing else felt right.
Personally I think template plastic would be too costlt so old stiff card board is the most economical :)

Have you considered using Inklingo instead of Engligh PP'ing? You print the hexagons (with marked seam allowances) directly on the back of the fabric and don't have to deal with all those papers. For more information see the "How to sew a GFG" video toward the bottom of the following webpage:

I used the pre-made templates that come in bags. They are made out of a heavier paper. The advantage of these is that the size will be consistent. The mylar are nice too..I have used those. The paper ones are less expensive. I think the company is called Paper Pieces. They carry just about every template imaginable in every size. I highly recommend them.

What is the difference in English Paper Piecing and just regular paper piecing?

I have made 3 hexie projects so far and use the mylar...I buy the sheets at Joann's and cut them with my Cricut George cartridge! Use them over and over.

I have the pre-cut templates-the paper is stiff enough to let a needle go thru. I love doing this kind of sewing as I sit and watch tv. It is very relaxing and you get so many done before you even know it. Just enjoy which ever way you decide.

I use the pre-cut templates that are cardstock weight. Paper is a little too flimsy for me and the plastic is too stiff.
BTW. Thank you for the stamps website. I have wanted to do a Double Wedding Ring and I think this is the way I'll accomplish it.

How do you form them without basting them on paper. Don't quite understand this concept.
