At any rate, he finally found this little sewing shop in Friedrichshafen and managed to tell the ladies there what he wanted. The fabric is beautiful quality, so soft and silky. Could someone translate what is written on the selvedges in the second picture?? Is it perhaps similar to our Aunt Grace 30's reproductions? I did learn that a metre is 39 inches but when the ladies learned that it was for an American quilter they cut each piece a generous 42 inches. I was surprised to find that it was 56 inches wide rather than our 42-44 inches. It was 10-14 euros per metre...is that pretty standard for good quality cotton? I wish he had kept the receipt from the shop so I could send a thank you note.
Beautiful fabric. Maybe one of the ladies from across the pond can look up the shop in Friedrichshafen for you and find the name :)

Your son did very well for you. I still kick myself for NOT being a quilter when I lived in Bavaria for 4 years. I did sew, so I bought some of the beautiful fabrics - BUT I would have bought so many more... AND I was there when the exchange rate was 4.25 marks to the dollar. Sigh...

I found Germany to be that way no matter where I was, but the fabric shoppe was especially "homey."
I just talked to the Sailor that did the driving when I was out there and he said, "Oh please, it wasn't the only shop in Friedrichshafen - just the only one I took you to." So my bad - the liklihood of it being the same shop is slim. He doesn't remember the name either, (I remember the "Tante Ema" was on everything I bought, so I thought that was the name of the shop! I would ask to go to Aunt Emma's and that's where he took me) but says it had patch or patchwork in it, and if you take Eckenerstrasse to Honistrasse, it's on the left... No, I made him spell those for me

Even if it's not the same place (how cool would that be?) it was such an awesome place to be.

I'm not German, but I studied at the Univ. Heidelberg.
Dapper is just a word they borrowed from English.
    Tante Ema means Aunt Emma.
Lieblingsstuecke fuer dich means favorite pieces for you.
