A question for one of our German members
#1
My son was in The Netherlands and Germany for a business trip last week. I had asked him to look for some cotton fabric for me while there. He is fairly fluent in German but for some strange reason(to me anyway) quiltmaking was not covered in his vocabulary. At any rate, he finally found this little sewing shop in Friedrichshafen and managed to tell the ladies there what he wanted. The fabric is beautiful quality, so soft and silky. Could someone translate what is written on the selvedges in the second picture?? Is it perhaps similar to our Aunt Grace 30's reproductions? I did learn that a metre is 39 inches but when the ladies learned that it was for an American quilter they cut each piece a generous 42 inches. I was surprised to find that it was 56 inches wide rather than our 42-44 inches. It was 10-14 euros per metre...is that pretty standard for good quality cotton? I wish he had kept the receipt from the shop so I could send a thank you note.

You are right, Tante Ema means Aunt Ema and "Lieblingsstücke" can be translated as favourite things. I looked it up in the internet - "Atelier Tante Ema" is a design studio from the Black Forest in south-west Germany. They are spezialized on fabrics, notions, wrapping paper, ribbons, pillow covers etc. You can have a look here:

The prices for the fabrics are quite cheap, quilt fabrics made in US are more expensive (around 16 Euros per meter or even more). I have never used these farbics but what I found out they have a good qualitiy.

Tante = Aunt
so I'm thinking the same ... Aunt Ema
You have a lovely assortment of fabrics ... have you determined what to do with them yet?
"Edit"
I'm not sure what info you are wanting, though I bet you can get it via Google.

It means aunt ema, favorite pieces for you.
I found the website
http://www.tanteema.com/
Very nice fabric and all fabric for clothmaking comes in that width over here. I think all quilting fabric is imported.

I have some fabric that I bought at Hancock Fabric that is almost identical to the piece that has Tante Ema on the selvage. The fabric has Tante Ema but the rest is in English. You might be able to find some coordiating pieces at Hancock Fabrucs.

Tante Ema is the name of the fabric manufacturer (i.e. Moda, Timeless Treasures)
I do believe it translates as "Aunt Ema"
“TANTE EMA” is believed to be currently owned by “Emanuela Pesché”.
Check out this site; Tante Ema fabric line:
