One of the coolest things I found was that my ancestors donated things to a museum in St. Louis. My husband and I took a trip and I got to stand next to pictures of my great, great, great, great, great grandfather and grandmother who lived in the 1800's . So I have a picture of me with them. I also found documents signed by President Polk to my ancestors. Of course, I also found out that one of my ancestors was a pirate. LOL.

I worked on ancestry.com for a while. I didn't know anyone had done much on my paternal lines. I got my brother to send in a sample to get his DNA. There is a group on yahoo for our last name. An expert on that site matched my brother's DNA to a line so I got names, dates, etc. back to the first Jamestown colony. That is as far as anyone has traced that line. My dad's mother's family has been traced back quite a ways. I have many names and dates from that line also.
There has been quite a bit of work done on my mother's family lines. Her father's line has been extensively researched.

I am researching my father's family. There have been legal name changes, lies told to protect the family (Nazi Germany), religion changes to protect the family. I am at the point (having finally found my Grandfather's place of birth) where I need to learn about how to make the jump to researching in Germany. I am also trying to locate a death certificate for my GG Grandfather.
My father turned in his DNA for a surname family project. Even though there are others in USA with the same surname, none of them match his DNA.
I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Please feel free to PM.

I have been doing genealogy for many years and love it. I don't dabble as much as I use to, but still play in it. I have found so many shirt tail relatives that do the same thing, if I hadn't started I would not of known these people exist. What makes me sad is the people that don't double check facts and just accept anything that is on a board.
