Because of the way that photos were taken back then..Everyone had to hold still for a long(ish) time. It was a little hard to hold a smile for that long. Also, in pics where someone was seated, they had their head in a 'brace' from behind to hold them still and after a while it hurt.

Thanks for sharing. Agreed, it's amazing how we dress in public today compared to only a few years ago. Who would have thought people would wear pajamas (or worse) in Walmart?!?
