Who makes the longest throat length on a "regular" sewing machine?

I bought the Bernina 830 for the throat space but also because I wanted an embroidery machine. Love the machine but it is HUGE & HEAVY. haven't done much with the embroidery module.

I agree. I was thinking of upgrading my Janome 6600 for the 7700 or 8900, but chose to go with a HQ Sweet Sixteen. I paid around $5,000 for her at Road to California show, and that included the stitch regulator, delivery, set up, and lessons. Couldn't be happier!! She is a real charmer!

Agree! I'm able to use any thread and it's so easy to get tension right. I did a baby quilt Friday and whipped right through it.

Watching threads on the board, it seems there are at least 9 of us that have the Sweet 16.
I have to say, I love the machine but found the stitch regulator irritating.
Unhooked it and am just trying to fmq without it.
Maybe eventually I'll get it.

Brothers 1500 has a 9" harp. Never heard of them having a 15". That would be a mid-arm I believe. But that would be great

I have taken many award quilting on my Bernina 1530 with only a 7.5" throat. Just need good support to quilt a queen size quilt. Not in competition anymore. Those days are over due to a disability but I still piece charity quilts with my Bernina.

Is there a way to get good comparison on actual space inside the harp other than personally measuring each one at a show or is there a chart somewhere with this info?

You can usually look up the throat specs on the manufacturer's websites.
However, there is some discrepancies as to how/where it is measured. (eg. if the post comes down to the base on a curve, where do they do the measurement from .. the widest spot? or the narrowest?

I seldom have seen height clearance measurements.
And likewise as to how measurements would be made.

I agree with you ... it's not all about the width, as the height can give you more space to stuff the quilt thru. Also, to see what you are doing.

So for a true apples-to-apples comparison you would be best to do it yourself and truly know all the measurements are taken from the same perspective.
