I may be in the minority in that I liked my initial idea, liked it while working on it, but don't like it much now that it's finished. Three or four of my quilts are in this category; one quilted and done, three others that are UFOs. I'll finish them, of course; my OCD wouldn't let me do otherwise. But will I really like them? The jury is still out.

I think my change of heart is due partially to my learning more as I go along, and being exposed to better ideas than the one I had! For instance, I have a log cabin that I now don't much like because it doesn't have enough contrast; I was too focused on choosing the "right" colors and didn't consider contrast. It's just a pretty boring quilt. Another is a red and white sampler quilt. I think I'm not crazy about it because it IS a sampler, and therefore, not symmetrical enough to suit my OCD..... which is peculiar because I love scrappy quilts.

Yep, life if too short to deal with things I don't like much or lose interest in -- like finishing a dull book or "ugly" quilt. I have given away quilt tops that I no longer find attractive.

I do not understand, if you don't like it, give it away or donate it and know someone out there will love it and you did a good deed, even if you just quilt it with a flannel sheet for backing.

I just can not force myself to work on something I don't like so I usually toss it into mu ufo's.

I've done some that I didn't like all the way through the process. Luckily when I showed it to someone else, they loved it so it went home with them. Others I have made at the request of another person and I was just glad when it was done.

I'm finding that I feel that way about some fabric. I loved it when I got it, but not so much now. I usually try to find a friend who likes it and pass it on and if that doesn't work, I'll sell it. If that doesn't work, I cut it into strips and squares for my scrap bin. Not so easy with a quilt!

I have found that when I'm working on a quilt and don't like it and friends/family encourage me to finish it I am always happy that I did, whether I like the end result or not. There's always someone who can use it and for me there is satisfaction just in following through with it. I think that depends on your own personality though; some of us need to finish and some can walk away with no problem. It's neither good nor bad, it's just you!

Leah - I love this story! I can relate to your situation with your dad; my father passed away a few years ago with dementia that they presumed was Alzheimer's. Unfortunately I ran out of time before I could make him a quilt, but I did make he and my mom one some years earlier when they were both well. Still, I would have loved for him to have one in the nursing home.

I can never really "see" a finished quilt until it is finished. So I finish them. If I don't care for it, someone will like it and I can surprise them with a quilt gift. I recently did a Christmas quilt that I really disliked-it was so boring and blah but my LAQ used a sparkled thread and when I got it back I loved it! I always finished them. Well except for a Cathedral window I started decades ago. I finally cut a piece out of it, framed it and hung it in my office. I get so many complements on it. Glad I didn't throw it out.

I have a top I finished, I call it the "ugly quilt". I'm hanging onto it - eventually I want to take longarm lessons so I can start renting time at the LQS, and this top will be perfect for learning & practicing on. It's actually growing on me a bit every time I see it - it's good quality fabric and I love one of the fabrics, I just picked the WRONG color to go with it! I'll probably donate the quilt when I'm done. SOMEONE will love it!
