I'd be careful of using superhero or "I Spy" themes. As pre- and young teens, my concern would be that they would quickly outgrow them.

The quilts Kristi and Mike posted, as well as the ones linked by Tothill for the Kiwanis Emergency Youth Shelter are great examples of quilts that they could enjoy now and would be able to use for years. The idea of making a pillowcase or simple drawstring bag for them is also a good one.

Nobody outgrows bacon, especially boys.

If these are rough and tough little boys, why not a blue jean quilt. Its manly enough for any age. Have one in the making now and was able to rid myself of an entire tub of blue jean pieces.
