I use pins-the curved kind. I can't handle the smell of most sprays and my dd has asthma so I won't spray something like that inside. We don't even use hairspray here except for other dd's dance recital and then we spray in one room where no one will be going for a few hours.

I've read about the aqua net but then some said their bigger quilts didn't stay together while machine quilting them so I chickened out. I wish I had a big surface to do any kind of basting-I have to do it in portions. I did see a video about how to sandwich with two long wooden boards so I got the boards and will be trying that sometime.

There is actual BASTING thread out there...cannot find mine this second, and name eludes me at the moment. Physical description: large spool, with a white label fully encircling the spool (except ends) printed with beige or taupe colored ink. The reason I do use this is...I hand baste (and baste and baste and baste). If you have ever machine quilted, and caught regular thread used for basting, it can pull those basting stitches and mess things up... Well, this basting thread is made to break if that sort of pressure is applied. The big spool goes a long, long way. It was recommended in a class, and I really do like it. I did try to find it...but simply is not where it is SUPPOSED to be. I used stuff for a class recently, then pulled all out of the rolling carrier, replacing those items with items for a watercolor class instead...and -nothing- has been the same ever since! ; - D

I baste with cheap white thread from the discount store. If I machine quilt I either spray or use the 1" bent pins.

I am about to try out Aqua Net...THANKS for the suggestion. I'm another one scared to try any kind of spray. Just for fun we'll do this with the grand-daughters next week...on their mini-quilt-projects. WHY NOT?!

I have use the Elmers Spray glue. Works great and washed out beautifully. Learned this from the lady that I took my first quilting class from to see if I really wanted to quilt. She is a hand quilter and uses it all the time.

I have sprayed and used pins. But I watched a you tube video by Sharon Schamber on basting your quilt and how she makes her quilt sandwich, I am converted. I don't no how to put the web site on but go to you tube and put in her name. It makes putting the sandwich together so much easier. I thought that was the worst part, it seemed I always had wrinkles to contend with. Check it out.

my hubby bastes my quilts with June tailor basting spray and then puts in quilters safety pins for me. Works great!!
