Question about making a scrappy log cabin...

I took a class through our guild from a lady that called her quilt the Freedom Quilt. We started with a 3 1/2 square, took any left over stripes from other projects, sewed them on, not paying any attention to the color or width. She made her blocks nine and half inches. I made my 12" because that was the size square ruler I had. You tilt you square ruler on your block and cut around it. Tilt the other way for the next block. I made a twin for charity. If I knew how to post a picture I would show it. Maybe later.

I've read that the use of red in the centers was very much a practical consideration. Reds, though prized, were in shorter supply than the duller, drab colors which were scraps from clothing. So the clever quilters used those small bright bits as centers of log cabin blocks, recognizing that they would thus ensure that the prized red was evenly distributed throughout the quilt.

Personal opinion here (so take it or leave it) I think all the centers should be the same color so that the eye has a place to rest.
I have heard the center is the heart of the home and traditionally was red.
