Carrot, I think you need to go to your general settings and scroll to:
[h=3]Messaging & Notification[/h]
<label for="sel_autosubscribe">Default Thread Subscription Mode:</label> When you post a new thread, or reply to a topic, you can choose to automatically add that thread to your list of subscribed threads, with the option to receive email notification of new replies to that thread.
Use the drop down menu and click one.

Looks like you can set one pic as your profile picture and another as your avatar. Cool feature!
