Personally, I think the lighting is more important that the wall color. Wall color should make you happy. Lighting should make the fabric happy.

I think it depends on your furnishings and wood tones, but I'd definitely keep it neutral so it doesn't distort color perception....but you already knew that! I'd say a shade and hue of cream is a safe bet.

I think it depends on the size of the room also. When I lived in Las Vegas my quilt studio was a converted 2 car garage so it was fairly large. I painted the walls a soft green called Crocodile Dreams (of all things) that I purchased at Lowe's. It was wonderful. I now sew in a formal living room with a huge picture window so I'm leaning toward a butter cream.

I worked in paint at Home Depot for years and one of the nicest neutrals is informal ivory in their Behr paint. In sun it has a very light yellow cast and at night it has a lite warm beige cast.
My old house was that color in all the connecting rooms and when I moved I liked it so much the new house got it too. It is a great backdrop to hang colorful quilts and pics on the walls without taking away from the colors.

I started out with sage green my favorite color at the time; discovered quickly that it distorted colors and was too dark, I repainted with white and it's perfect. You can bring character and color in with your quilts.
