I don't put in a new needle after each project neither, I fgure as long as it's working why change it. But when I do change the needle they go into a pill bottle with a tiny hole in the lid. But after reading some of your posts, I think I'll be saving thm for nails, what a great idea!!

I change my needles fairly frequently and discard in old prescription bottles.

Since I usually buy them in boxes of 100 I don't feel I am wasting that much money. I know what I sew won't be marred because I practiced extreme frugality.

I'm also one of those who keeps their old needles in a pill bottle for future use in hanging small wall quilts, patterns and memos on my bulletin board and for hanging strips on a wall with those large binder clamps. I keep another bottle for bent and broken needles to toss in the trash when full.

I put my needles and bent pins in 35mm film containers. When a container is filled, I put the lid on it and throw it in the trash. Since I change needles after every 8 hours of sewing or with each new project, I fill those film canisters pretty often.

I listen to the sound of the machine when the needle goes thru the material, it makes a very distinctive sound when its in need of replacing.

Interesting reading! I usually change my needle when I forget to change presser feet & break it. LOL!!! I never worried about changing needles so often or even oiling & cleaning my machine until I got my Bernina. Now my cleaning brush stays right by my right hand so I can wisk away fuzz often. Maybe I can get better at changing out needles too.

I keep mine in a pin cushion, you know those ones that look like a tomato? I use them when I have to sew denim or some heavy fabric while making a purse, if they are so bad while doing these projects then out they go. :)
