you are fortunate to find such a nice machine. as for the permanent marker. you could try a nail polish remover with acetone. when I was working we used acetone to remove any permanent marker and it came right off. you may want to try it on an underside spot first to make sure it doesn't affect the finish. good luck and happy sewing with this beauty.jan

And if you are in the market for a brand name LA machine, check out the one on CL in your neck of the woods (maybe), Washington. There was a post on it in one of today's entries. That is a DEAL.....and I love your Viking. Lucky lucky you. Enjoy.

Given the great machine you found, I think you should pat yourself on the back.
As far as not buying more machines, how much space do you have? If you are getting tight on space, you could make a rule that you have to sell one machine for every one you buy, or for every two you buy, etc. Then you would keep only the ones you really want.
I have too many machines now and will be selling some soon. With one exception of a Janome that had features I needed, I haven't bought a new-to-me vintage machine or any other machine for several years, although people keep giving them to me to fix. I also give some away. I just don't have room for all of them.

To get the marker off try a little hairspray on a cotton ball in an inconspicuous spot. if that doesn't work try a mix of couple drops of Dawn and tsp of hydrogen peroxide. Great find by the way.

Don't know if this will work on a sewing machine but I have used Alcohol-prep pads, the ones nurses use before giving a shot, on other surfaces. It worked well. You could try just plain rubbing alcohol and a white cloth on an inconspicuous spot to see if it works.
PS Sure is a pretty machine. Why would you want to stop? HAHA.
