Does the " leader" do this in her home or place of business......do you get a receipt? How many members? How long is your day w/ her? Sounds like under the table money to me.....

I pay $20/yr at one and $24/yr at the another....day time one we have lunch and night time we have snacks...must provide once/yr. that monthly fee sounds wrong somehow, especially when no classes or speakers....turned down??? that's a whole different story, not going there...and these are quilters????

I belong to a small group with no dues. We meet in homes and when it's your turn to host you make breakfast for the group. The month before you host you hand out a block to each person and they piece the block for you. I feel this is a great way because you have help making a quilt and it's a memento from the group. We do have to keep the group small because of space but it seems to work out and we do have a few guests who if they like come to meetings until a spot opens up for them to join. When we do charity quilts you supply the materials but this way you do control the cost.

I can't imagine any group being worth $12 a week. What did they plan for you following the meeting. Must have been something fantastic. Also I am curious as to the size of the group--and did the rest of the member pay that amount every time they met? They have to be quilters with unlimited funds.

The group that I attend was started s a "counter" to guilds. We meet free at local library, have no dues or officers. People who wish may attend our QOV work days.

Our guild charges $24 per year. We have one monthly meeting and one or more sewing meetings which is usually a class taught by a member. People take turns bringing lunch items for the regular meetings, but we sack lunch classes. The business meeting is in the morning then we have lunch and sew. When we have a hired teacher we pay a small fee. It has typically been $20 which helps pay her fee and also insure your attendance. In the past we have had problems with people signing up for free classes then not attending. The guild was stuck with a hefty price tag for just a few participants. FYI some of us felt the classes chosen were not too good, so I think that was why attendance was poor.

I also belong to a small group which meets at the LQS. We pay $5 per meeting each to the shop owner. That fee is the same for classes, meetings or whatever and is for use of her huge classroom. I
It is a bargain for use of her tables, irons, cutting stations and so on. When she has classes there most teachers only charge $20 if anything at all.

In both locations we do not have to tear down or set up for ourselves, which had become a problem for members. Our guild members were having problems toting around the heavy tables and so on.

This group is extremely expensive. Our Guild dues just went UP to $20 per year.
Wonderful and friendly does not sound like the judgmental group you are describing.
I used to think all quilters were nice people. Then I joined a group in Remus and found out otherwise. Quilters are just people, and we all should choose our friends carefully! I chose to go elsewhere and found a wonderful group of quilters to be a part of their Guild.

I think she is talking about a mini-group, not a guild. I've never paid a cent for being part of a mini-group, but we met in each others homes, not in a public building.

If it goes to the church ask for a receipt each time and take it off your taxes.

I can understand a fee but whether it is $5 or $12 a week, I would want to know how my $$s are used

I think $12/week if excessive. I think you need to learn more about why the amount is so high. I belonged to a large quilt guild for several years and the dues were $17/yr., but that included guest speakers, like well known quilt teachers. If you took a class after the meeting with that teacher there might be another small fee, $5 if I remember correctly. If you were a guest when they had a guest speaker, you would pay $5, but members did not have to pay that. I think I would check around about other quilting groups or even start one of your own.
