I made each of my grandchildren an embroideried ABC quilt. My daughter's girls still use them to cover up on the couch (ages 18 & 22). My son's boys quilts are on the wall. Either way I'm happy. It took about a year to hand embroidery each quilt.

I like my quilts used and loved, I don't care if the child drags it around as this shows me how much he loves the quilt. My grandson did that with one of the quilts I made him as a baby, and it got really used looking but loved, now that he is in his twenty's and not married his mom gave it to him and could not believe that it was saved. He said it would be used for his child when that happens.. love that all my quilt get used a lot..

I like to think of my quilts as hugs I can leave behind when I go, so I tell people to use them. I also give them written care instructions that will help them last while being used. I do secretly love it when a quilt comes back to be repaired from over use though....lol!

My cousin pulled all of her babies' quilts out when their babies her DGKs were born and she uses them for the times they visit her. She made new quilts for her DGKs when they were born to take home. She has always had them on display in the guest room. They are in good shape because she knows how to take care of them. Her DILs also like to quilt and they know how to take care and use. All the quilts are labeled.

Kids, even babies, choose there own 'lovies' - who knows where the preference comes from. I made my grandson a quilt, even put satin blanket binding (over the regular binding) because his father had loved satin binding. Well my grandson's lovie is a hand knit blanket made by my DIL's stepmother's former sister-in-law. (And if it were any bigger I'd probably steal it) Even at my house he prefers an old afghan to a quilt - that is just what he likes... but he loves me!

I was fortunate to be given baby quilts for my kids. Most were used by all 5 of my kids in their cribs/toddler beds. I then packed them away. I did not allow "blankies" to be dragged around. Now as the kids marry and have their own families I give them their quilts. What happens to them now is in their hands.

When I make a baby quilt or am asked to make one, I generally make a sturdy quilt to be loved and used. When I presented baby quilts to our next door neighbors when their twins were born, I explained that although they thought they were beautiful, that they could be used, cuddled, etc. I'm not sure if they were used often, however, both quilts hang in a place of honor in their house. Both quilts were simply pieced, a square sewn into a triangle on two sides of a 6" piece of muslin, which created a square of 4 triangles, which I then quilted by embroidering an abundance of embroidery stitches on my Janome 4000 using various rayon threads in every color of the rainbow. After a while, making two identical quilts reached a maximum number of blocks, which I then made large borders of blue and pink gingham, with a teddy bear print for the back. I know the quilt I just finished for our DGD is on her bed and she sleeps under it every night, but whether she will drag it around with her, I'm not sure. When she first saw the quilt she said it was very beautiful and she loved it very, very much - she was 3 1/2. At lease she is using it and when she grows tired of it I will make her another one; but I think she still uses the very first quilt I made for her. I do know that my DS and DDIL love both quilts I made her, and Zoe plays with a couple other play quilts I made for her. Since she will probably be the only grandchild, I hope I can make her lots more, at least they are appreciated.

I was given one as a baby gift and used it. It needs a patch or two, but I am hanging onto it until I get grandkids. Then I will pass it on.

Wore to the nubs ones. As long as it is because of use and love and not because of abuse or neglect.

I tell my recipients to feel free to use the quilt and not to worry about wear and tear. I'll repair it if it ever needs it and if it gets beyond repair, I'll make them a new one. however, if someone would prefer to save their quilt, that's ok too because it's their quilt to use as pleases them.
