I use a mechanical pencil for the light fabric and a white pencil for the dark, works great, if I make a mistake I can erase the marks and everything comes off in the wash. Sometimes I do not even wash the quilt when it's finished, the pencil lines fade away with time.

how about trying tailors chalk , the grease kind, not chalky. I am a retired seamstress/ tailor and use it in my quilting ,also. It disappears with steam.Does not rub away at all. I order mine by the box of 48 from Atlanta Thread Company. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your input about the different tools to mark quilting lines. I have only done strait line quilting because I didn't know what to use to mark the fabric with to do anything other than strait line quilting. Some really good ideas I'm sure I'll be trying some of them out.

I tried using the marking pencils but they were sooooo frustrating

    They kept breaking

I decided to use light regular old no 2 type pencil on light fabrics and white chalk for dark fabrics

As silly as this sounds, I wonder if we could mark our quilting lines with a tracing wheel and ? Any ideas?

I like the Clover white marker- when you use it, the marks don 't show up st first but after about 30 seconds they appear- they go away with ironing - one of my favorites

I've never had any trouble although I have read comments on here where they have left marks. I have three colours blue, red and black use on different colours try to keep blue with blue fabric etc., black used where colour match.

i also use them to mark my diary as you can rub out changed plans.
Ladies in my quilt grp. just bought these and are using them. They love them and I stopped on the way home to buy some of them.[Extra for women next week]

So many great ideas! I feel like I've got a whole lot more to try. Definitely going to look into the washable crayola markers and the fingernail whitener pencil for my dark fabrics. That is simply brilliant.

I am so glad I asked this question. I feel buoyed up by all these new ideas!
