I always hand stitch the bindings to the back of the quilt. I tried machine stitching on a small wall hanging and just didn't like the look of it on either the front or the back. I am RELIGIOUS about double stitching every 5th stitch when binding the back by hand. Works great for me

The only problem with folding the back over to front to make the binding is that you only have a single layer of fabric for the binding on the edges which get the most wear. I have done this a few times and though it looks cute on some, I prefer the regular binding. If you have enough fold over you could fold enough to make it a double layer of binding. I haven't tried this yet, as I just thought of it now.

I also machine stitch the binding on the front and hand sew on the back. However, I do one more thing. I insert a 1/2 inch strip of the batting inside the binding to make it nice and filled out. At several of our quilt shows the judges seem to like this affect. I usually get a good grading on this on the critique from the judge.
