they make a heavy warm quilt, hard to manuver i think on the machine, i hand quilt alot, easier to hand quilt

Sheets have too high a thread count for most quilting. So beware. And, yes, prewash the sizing out. Some sheets wrinkle badly, esp the high thread count cotton. I wouldn't use the high thread count.

I love to use a sheet as backing - no problem finding the right color - washes and wears very well.

My mom is a long armer and she doesn't like to use a sheet for the back. The thread count is too high and the needle doesn't pierce it very well. Sometimes, the needle will actually break a thread in the fabric and that will eventually be a hole in the back fo the quilt. I avoid using them.

I'm a beginner and I had read somewhere that it wasn't a good idea to use sheets. I didn't say why. But I had all these old sheets, worn but with good material around the outsides. So I started cutting out blocks for a simple couch throw and soon found out that the material was so soft that I couldn't cut a perfect square. Spray starch to the rescue. And lots of it. The stiffened squares went together well. I'm getting good at matching up my corners. Used poly batting and another sheet for the backing. Machine stiched in the ditch with invisable/white thread. And the surprise was that after it was washed, this quilt is the softest, most snuggly quilt I have. Just right for the couch in the den on a cool evening.

I have not had time to start a large quilt, but soon I hope. hubby got me a king size flat sheet at the good well. it is white. so I am gone to dye it green. his favorite color. and use that for his king size Christmas gift as the backing. so have not tried to quilt it yet, but hopfully real soon.
