What a nice thread, thanks for starting this Eddie

I got married in 1975 to a guy in study hall. He was shy and had a nice car. He was a severe diabetic and was on 3 shots of insulin a day. We were never lucky to have children because of his diabetes.

In 1989 both of his kidneys failed and he was on home dialysis for 1 year and still worked a full time job. He was put on a kidney and pancreas transplant list at a major hospital. In March of 1990, after work I went to a ceramic class for the 1st time and when I was there, I remember telling this lady that I would be getting a phone call (I sensed something was up) and that it would be my husband calling to tell me to get home fast as the hospital had his new organs. I had just picked up the items to make and guess what. The phone rang and yep it was my husband so I drove home and took him to the hospital about 1 1/2 hours drive one way. They got my husband all ready for surgery and we waited for the Dr. The Dr. was at the other hospital removing the kidney and pancreas from a lady that had just died. About 2:00 am. the next morning the Dr. came in and was so upset, crying and said that he was not going to be able to do his surgery. The organs had harding of the arteries and he was not going to use them for my husband. He said he was sorry but to not give up on hope as he would find him new organs yet that year.

On September 18, 1990 while I was at work I got a phone call and they had the new organs for my hubby. That morning at work I was so nervous and knew something was up. I was right. I drove him to hospital and that night he had surgery. They cancelled all surgeries at the hospital as they had 5 patients to give the new organs to so they had to call in hundreds of RN's and specialists.

my husband got a kidney and pancreas transplant
    guy got the heart
    guy got the other kidney
    lady got a lung
another lady got the other lung

all 5 patients got transplants from the same donor
This made history for the hospital.
We found out later that the 21 year old man was riding his motorcyle without a helmet, had a wreck and he was brain dead. When he got his drivers license he marked that he wanted to be an organ donor on anything that they could use.
His eyes and skin went to other hospitals along with helping the 5 patients at this hospital.

We are so blessed to have him to donate his organs.

My husband is no longer a diabetic and doesn't have to take insulin now. He was a diabetic since 4th grade.
It will now be 20 years on September 18, 2010 since he got his new organs.

Your story gave me chills. AND that's why I am a donor.
