Don't you just love the old fabrics?? I finished the last of 3 antique quilt tops. One was a memory quilt, all the ladies have passed on, one came down thru the family as a bribe to name a baby Samuel Moody------ the other one I lost my mind and hand quilted the whole quilt one eighth of a inch apart. They were all hand pieced so felt I had to honor them by hand quilting.

I love the old vintage quilts, this one is very pretty and your quilting is fantastic. A friend of mine has quite a few old hand pieced quilts but she can't find anyone that will LA quilt them because of the hand piecing, did you have any problems?

It seems like about 90% of the ones that I quilt are old vintage tops that someone has that their grandmother made, etc. Most of those were hand-pieced as well. I've found that it's better to "float" the bottom of the top rather than pin and stretch the top since the stretching can pull at the seams and stress the hand-stitching. Also, the older tops can be a challenge, since there's usually little that is square about them. But I really like quilting them and bringing that quilt maker's original vision to finality with a finished quilt. To me it just seems a shame that a top they made sits in a drawer somewhere rather than being the quilt that they intended.

You always do such sympathetic quilting for each of the vintage tops entrusted to you. Despite the fact the tops are perhaps at a higher monetary level untouched, I believe the creator would have intended them to be made into quilts. With you finishing them and bringing out more of their beauty it completes their work. Always a job very well done.
