I have done the same thing, and it works great when hand printing the quilt label in permanent ink. I first print on the computer the message and then using 'blue' tape adhere it to the top of the plastic table, 'blue' tape the fabric over that - and then print away!

Yes, here is one my sweet hubby made for me out of an old scanner. He attached gridded paper to the underside so I would have a guide when tracing. Also cuts the glare. Its a great size, nice and sturdy and I love it.

You take its insides out, velcro a flourescent light of the right size to the hollow core, stick the cord through a convenient hole--there will be several in the hollow core of the scanner or you can easily make one--and voila', you have a light box with a cover.
Those old scanner are hard to find now, but you might find one at a garage sale for less than a dollar.

I am lucky to work in a doctor's office. When our X-ray department went digital (so the doctors could read them on their computers) the light box was obsolete. They let me have it. I also read somewhere that you can use your table if it has leaves in it. Open the table up, put a piece of glass over the opening and a strong flashlight underneath. Haven't tried it, but it sounds like it would work although not portable at all!
