Do just a few as a test first.

Great find! I would air outside for a few days and then handwash (perhaps with vinegar) and air dry on a flat surface. that should get rid of the smell. You'll probably have to iron them, but they do look pretty. The blocks will make a nice old-fashioned quilt.

I would pick some blocks to fill a zip lock 2 gallon bag. Put blocks inside, spray an old dryer sheet with some Febreze (its molecules bond with the oily ones of smoke etc), and pack the bag and lay it closed in the sun. My MIL used to smoke and the kids stuffed animals would reek with the smell of just being in the house, even though she didn't smoke when we were there. Thank goodness she quit soon after. Good luck.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Worth a try.

I wouldn't even soak them in water first...............I'd put a small bowl of vinegar in the bins and let it set for a month or so. NO water! We bought a car that reeked of smoke...we did the vinegar trick and you can't smell the smoke at all any more.

I would wash them by hand and not in the machine, they look hand pieced. I have found that GAIN laundry soap is great for odors and musty smells. When I find old fabric/blocks like that.....I try to use the old stuff together instead of mixing new fabric with it. Just my 2 cents worth. :o)
