A String Quilt would be my choice. If the stripes are varried in width and long enough. Can you add some of your own pieces or are you limited to what's in the bag? I took what is called a brown bag from our Guild for charity-I love the challenge. It sure broadens your skills.

you could do a scrappy log cabin with all different colors of dark on one side and lights on the other side with just 2 1/2 in strips make up nicely

Quick and no fret is the string, or wonky log cabin. You can also randomly sew them together and then square them up,think crumb squares. If the color is not pleasing, just coffee or teady when finished to blend.

Try looking for an "assembly line log cabin quilt".

This is one I love.

I like Bonnie Hunter's website http://www.quiltville.com/
for scrappy patterns. I just love her. And she is so generous: her website has over 40 FREE patterns. For 2" strips, Bricks is easy and fun way to use lots of scraps.

Remeber you CAN cut down to more 2" strips OR you CAN recut the 4.5" strips to 4.5" squares.you could take your 4.5 sqs run 2" strips around them- scrappy, then sash them out w/either a light or dark solid. need bigger? ADD piano border- strips(2"-3.5") sewn together, then cut to width you wish! I always finish w/a another border( don't like all those seams on edge!

You could do a scrapy strip quilt. Lay the strips vertical and every two or three strips add a white or light. You would use both 4 1/2" and 2 1/2" strips. Also you could quilt as you go.

Our guild is creating charity quilts (though we call them comfort quilts) from grab bags as our challenge for the next three months. I brought home two bags, and I was able to make a pretty good quilt out of the first bag of fabric I got, but this second bag has me stumped.

It has 2 inch strips and 4 inch strips...well, most of them are strips. Some are just 8 inches long. It's obvious the committee member just grabbed a handful of these and stuck them in a bag.

Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to use these to make a quilt? I am fairly new to quilting, less than 2 years, though I have been sewing all my life. We can add our own fabric if we want to. I am quite willing to do that...but first I need to figure out what to do.

The quilts will be for family members whose homes burned in the wild fires several weeks ago. We have 50 some people who will receive our quilts, adults and kids.

These strips don't match at all, so I guess a scrappy quilt of some sort is in order. I downloaded one called a Wickedly Easy Quilt, but it starts with fat quarters and uses strips of 4 1/2 and 2 1/2. I can't seem to wrap my brain around how to make it work for me.

So, does anyone has an idea for me....? I think a more experienced quilter should have got this bag. :(
It sounds as if this might be what was intended.

Sew two long 2" strips to each other right sides together, and iron open. Sew those to a 4" strip and iron open. Take a large square ruler and cut it into triangles first up, then down. Line up the diagonal lines printted on the ruler with the lines of stitches.
Make square blocks out of the triangles, four to a block, .....or experiment with other layouts
ps,
sew all, iron all, cut all in bunches to save a lot of time.
and
if the strips are short sew them end to end until you get long strips. you can kind of chain that process.
That is going to make an interesting scrappy color pattern.
