waste of money...I bought on for a class and could have just used a regular one. These classes all have lists of goodies for you to buy THERE!.

I am planning on using what I have, not sure how it will be used. If I did a good deal of paper piecing you can be sure I would have looked harder for one. I have kept my eye open for one while at a couple of quilt shops, but not seen one in the last couple of weeks. Thanks for all of the comments, I have seen these in the past and wondered, what would I use that for, now I know.

'Add a 1/4"' ruler isn't a regular ruler! It has a raised 1/4" edge to it and is a 'must' for paper piecing. I have a 6" one which I use all the time when paper-piecing. I wish I had a 12" one as well but they don't seem to be available in England.

here are pictures of what my hubby did with mine

He cut two pieces of plexiglas, 4"x6" and I just tape the ruler to the top so that the lip of the ruler is along the upper edge.

Just have to set the ruler in place, flip over the paper pattern onto the plexiglas, bring down the ruler, and slice off that excess fabric.

Makes it so easy to get that perfect 1/4" or 1/8" seam.

I have one but don't use it. You can add a 1/4 inch with any ruler you already have. Waste of money for me.

I also have this but it's not the same thing - doesn't do the same job! If you do a lot of PP, the ruler is invaluable. Dolphyngyrl has explained how it works!

Is that really thin plexiglass? So is it basically taking the place of the postcard when using the ruler? Thanks.

I have a quarter inch rectangular prism that is about 12" long. If I need to add a quarter of an inch onto anything, I place it against the outside edge and draw a line on the other side. Perhaps your teacher means for you to purchase something similar?

My plexiglas is the same thickness as the lip on the ruler, thus it all lays very flat when trimming away.

It really works great. We got 5 of them from a small sheet of plexi so my co-quilters got them also. They really are a big plus.
