I have a class I am taking this week, the add a 1/4 inch ruler is listed on the supply list (if you have one), which I do not. I have a 12 inch ruler with an added 1/4 inch on it, but am thinking this is not the right one. I just wonder if anyone has one and how you use it? Thanks.

i think any smallish quilting ruler with 1/4" markings will suffice. i think the teacher just doesn't want you to try to wield a large ruler for the markings.

It also comes in a 6 inch length, which might be easier to deal with depending on the blocks you're making.

It's a fabulous little notion to have, and I use it ALL the time when I'm paper piecing.

You can pp without it, but if your teacher is going to be using it in class for a new technique (to you), you're probably better off having it. I'm sure the shop sells it.

I have one but don't recall ever using it. I think it is for when you have templates without the 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Maybe it is for paper piecing, they have a special quarter inch ruler for that.

Use it every time I paper piece and couldn't do without it.

Actually the class I am taking is a court house steps quilt as you go table runner. I have a ruler I can use that is 12 inches and a 6 inch one as well. I have never paper pieced, but can see how it would be useful for that.

I have the 1/4" ruler and have used it once in 6 years. I'm sure you'll get opinions both ways on it, but it is one of the cheapest rulers that they make, probably because it gets lost so easily. LOL I do quite a bit of paper piecing but have never used it for that.

I have one and find it a very useful tool, especially for paper piecing!

it is good for foundation and paper piecing as well as the old But is also used when string quilting when you have irregular edges that should be cut evenly. If your supply list recommended it then I would urge you to get it. It will make the project easier to do as you don't have to continually sight the 1/4" seam. It is one of those things that you have to figure out other uses for it. Classes are much more pleasant and less stressful if you have the correct supplies.
