My friend Marci, (who has absolutely EVERYTHING) has one and is generously allowing me to use it as I make Bill's (Lockeb) paperpieced placemats, I love the tool and must absolutely add it to my supplies. I'm also loving the paperpiecing :) :) :)

If you can't find a add a quarter inch ruler, go to the class and for that class barrow a ruler, ask the teacher where to get the ruler and then purchase it by the next class.

I have one and use it for PP, it is invaluable, I also have an add an 1/8th one for smaller PP projects.

I recently took a paper piecing class and this ruler was on the supply list. I don't have one but now that I've seen how it works it looks like a worthwhile "gadget" to have....and probably both sizes....6" and 12".

What I did not know about the ruler, and what doesn't show in photos, is that there is a little ridge on the bottom that lays right up against the seam and keeps the ruler in place while you're trimming off the excess. Particularly nice in paper piecing when you have multiple layers to trim as it can be a challenge for a regular ruler to stay in place.

There is also an add-an-eighth ruler which would be useful for intricate paper piecing.

I use mine all the time for paper piecing, wouldn't be without it. It has a ridge on the bottom that helps to align the ruler with the seam so you cut off exactly the right amount. But I don't know how you would use it for your courthouse steps. If the supply list simply says to bring it if you have it, then it sounds like it isn't entirely necessary. I would wait until class and see how the teacher uses it before deciding to purchase one. (Unless you also do paper piecing - then I would say to definitely buy that ruler!)

I use one for PP. I was happy that I got one.

the 1/4" {WIDTH} ruler is invaluable--i use it to measure pieces in a log cabin--just don't ever use a rotary cutter with it if you value your fingers!

it's actually 1/2"--there is 1/4" on each side of the center line
