I just graduated from doing the strictly follow the seam quilting to doing the diagonal and it's pretty easy. I think it would be great with this quilt. You will end up with an X in each square. I was very proud of my first diagonal and will be doing more of it. I think it is actually easier than stitch in the ditch.

I would suggest a varigated as well. Try your local quilt shop for YLI thread that's varigated that will contrast with your back so it will show. Would stipple it - good experience builder, just be sure to get some machingers gloves to hold your quilt with as you are quilting. As for criticism - you did a good job. Do you have a quarter inch foot. Learning to sew 1/4" even with the foot takes practice. Now I also make sure my blocks are "square" the size I want them, because I also have a tendency to not always cut them square (LOL). I use a strip cutting ruler and it makes a lot of difference for me, but still have to make sure things are square. Congratulations and you just keep on a quilting. I learn something new with every quilt I make

Does your backing have a pattern you could trace on the yellow tissue sold in LQS? Can't remember the name, sorry. I like tracing an animal the child likes and quilting it all over with that pattern. I also heard someone at guild say use a sticky note in the shape you want and fallow it, outlining the notes spread over the quilt.
If you have seen my messy studio updates on this site ,you know I love thread. If I understood you say the child likes purple that is what I would do the quilting in. I try to please the person I am doing the quilt for. I don't care to much for the fishing line stuff. Yes I have 4 or 5 all different (.03mil or something) spools of it and no I don't use it often. I am not a fan of it.
