Sometimes it just isn't worth it to try to save a couple of dollars.

Even is the associate did mean well.

I would call and tell them what happened. At any LQS I go to they are reluctant to tell you exactly what you need and just for this reason. I wouldn't expect her to take it back, but I would let her know and see what she has to offer as compensation, if nothing, then you may not want to shop their again.
But I never put on a back without something that refelcts teh front, maybe a strip of color or a row of blocks, so I would just make the best of what you have if she doesn't offer you the remainder at a discount.

I agree with you here....I always buy at least 1/4 yd. more than I think I need to allow for mistakes and/or shrinkage. You never know how much any one given fabric is going to shrink when you wash it.....and I'm in the school of always washing my fabrics before using them.

I got a very good example of why I do it this last week when I bought a burgundy print for the next quilt I'm going to make....I washed it and all the dye came out along the fold line and in very narrow streaks all over the fabric. The entire piece of fabric looked very faded. I had no trouble getting a refund for it, but I thought of all the people who used that fabric and didn't wash it first and how disappointed they are going to be the first time that quilt is washed....it wasn't cheap fabric either, but cost $9 a yard.

Lesson learned for you was to err on the side of a little too much, than too little!
