So, I only wind 5 bobbins at a time. Once they are gone I clean the machine, wind up 5 more, put my needles into the slot closest to the new wound bobbins, and begin stitching again. Once those bobbins are gone I clean my machine and remember it is time to change the needle because the needles are in the slot beside my bobbins. After this I then put the needles in the far left slot so I know that I did it.
This method makes sense to me. It's so logical for sewing in between large quilts.

I change my needle with every new quilt. If I do something like placemats, I save the needle for another small project. I also use a different needle size to quilt than to piece.

What size needle do you use to quilt on lightweight cotton material?
Also what weight thread and 100% cotton for lightweitht cotton material or blend and what brand? For machine sewing?

I use polyester batting and it dulls the needle so I change it after each quilt. Am I wasting my $$$?

I do a lot of applique so change the needle every other project or so, unless it's huge one, then I change it as soon as it's done. With quilting, I change it every other project on those the size of a baby quilt or wallhanging.
I am pretty consistent, 'cuz I just don't like dealing with problems....

You can find both Schmetz and Organ titanium at http://www.discountembroiderysupply.com/ for a reasonable price.
