Definitely chaps and gloves; and, while the detail shows better in the light one, the darker one would be a better blender.

Both fabrics are nice. The darker one is richer...

Which is better? The darker one or the lighter one?
It depends upon how western you want to really get with the quilt. These are chaps and are worn on the outside of jeans, both for working cowboys (cowboys are what they are really called on a working ranch) and for those who ride in the Rodeo. Chaps are made of leather and are flared out some to help things slide off of them so to speak. They wrap around the leg and buckle. The purpose for the working cowboy is to protect their legs from brush and thorns on mesquite trees, or other thorny bushes. They also help protect from cattle horns. On a ranch some guys or gals don't wear them unless they are working cattle. In a rodeo those riding bulls wear them a lot. Then there are those who just wear them for decoration, if they are really fancy ones. But they do serve a purpose to help protect the cowboys/girls legs. Just a little info since you didn't know what they were.

the cowboys in the old west they would help keep the horse from rubbing them raw(in case chaps) kept them from chaffing.

They are for sure chaps, gloves and belt buckles I see them every day as I do live in a real cowboy town. Only place I've ever lived there you see cowboy wearing a gun on their hip and a dog by his side or ride on the horse with him.
