I also "discovered" a Mill End store in Sioux Falls, SD--a warehouse store with really discount prices.

Valid point. But if one is looking for chain fabric stores in my area, only Joann's shows up in that search. Hancock's and Hobby Lobby don't even show up when Googling "fabric". You'd need to do a store locater search for those.

Fabric Depot is THE best!
My daughter lives in Portland and I always visit Fabric Depot when I go. Quality fabric and always discounted.

Jamies Crafts in Hastings, Michigan has reasonable material and is quilter shop quality for $3.99 and up also fat quarters for $1.75. Friends Quilting Basket in Lake Odessa, Michigan is a new quilt shop that is getting a nice supply of quilting fabric and notions. They are trying to keep their prices reasonable.
