I have a collection of them in all sizes, they are from commercial knitting machines, they held the yarn. I have a shelf in my sewing room with some of them and then a bunch of smaller ones with yarn still on them, like the look.

I love the spools and have quite a few. One is made into a lamp and the shade has sewing items on it.

I have some old spools. I roll my bindings one them. When I'm ready to sew the binding to the quilt I place the spool in a plastic box on the floor and the binding just rolls off as I stitch.

Those are great! How about using them for candle holders? Might need to put a small saucer or something similar on top to hold the candle.

OH lucky you, I can see the smaller one holding binding , Put a string through spool and place around neck and binding gets sewn very quickly.

DH says they look like loom spools. How big are they?
